About Bowes Pre-School

The Pre-School is situated in the centre of the village of Bowes, approximately 4 miles south west of Barnard Castle.  It is based in Woodpecker Lodge a large Scandinavian style log cabin which was completed in January 2010 and is fully equipped with a kitchen and toilets, fully resourced to allow for a wide range of activities, providing an exciting and stimulating environment.

  • The cabin is situated within the playground of Bowes Hutchinson’s CE (Aided) School and has the opportunity to take full advantage of the school’s extensive facilities including the spacious school hall, secure play ground for bikes and wheeled toys, playing field, climbing area, gruffalo trail, secret garden and early years outdoor area.
  • Bowes Pre-School aims to make the most of these superb facilities by providing a free flow indoor/ourdoor environment, no matter what the weather.  The pre-School porvides water proof clothing and wellington boots for outdoor play in wet weather.
  • DCC supports the Pre-School by providing advice and guidance such as  advisory teachers and special educational needs support and training.
  • Bowes Pre-School, in common with the School, has a family atmosphere, with children playing together regardless of age differences. This is said by childhood theorist Vygotsky to enhance children’s learning through the Zone of Proximal development.
  • Pre-School children who opt to stay for lunch also eat with the older children.  This makes their subsequent transfer into school much easier as they already know the children and staff very well.  For those children who leave to another Primary School it gives them experience in the school lunch environment.

Our latest Ofsted report states that

“Staff have a generally good knowledge of how young children learn.  They combine their expertise and good teaching strategies to provide a wide range of purposeful play and learning opportunities to engage and motivate children"
